[Shiro doesn't remember falling, but it feels a little like he's been dropped off a high building and frankly, given the likelihood that he was teleported here, for whatever reason... he doubts, with his luck, that it was a gentle landing. He deeply considers lying prone for a few more minutes, but the sound of excited voices filter through to his awareness past the pain, talking about a 'beam of light'. Before he can think about how much he hurts, he's rolling into a tense, ready crouch, just in time for several large shapes to break through the foliage. Shiro can only gape at the variety of the figures that fan out to surround him, scales and vines and wings. He hasn't seen such a menagerie gathered in one place since, well... the coliseum.

It's not a comforting comparison.

Weary dread sluices through Shiro's body as they circle him, jeering. He seems weak! and King Darc will know just what to do with this one. and He'll be quite a prize, with this last line, an echo from the past again, ratcheting his pulse up until it feels like his chest will break. Though Shiro knows from their tone it won't do any good, he warns them to back off just once before lunging at the nearest one, hoping surprise will give him enough edge to run.]

And with a smile like that on your face. Aren't you reckless! Deimos are greedy people.

[laughs.] A smile like what? I don't mind, honestly. You're going out of your way to help me; I should be doing something for you in return.

[Darc lets out a short noise, disarmed.]

Like it's easy! Or like you want to make an offer like that. How can you still--

[he stops short, frowns.]

[Blinks.]

I do.

How can I...?

[Darc goes through A SERIES OF AGITATED FACES, one of which is broken open and full of an ache.

He tries to pin down what he was about to say, why suddenly the open, honest face on Shiro - like he's got no idea why Darc expects Shiro to be defensive, cagey, ready for anyone and everyone to entrap him - is causing his guts to twist up.

If Shiro could go through being a slave and still retain such a simple kindness, a logic Darc had believed in once, what did that say about Darc.

He blurts his words before he can stop himself.]

I'm the Deimos king. You're all alone in my kingdom. Even if you're in no danger, you should be more afraid.

[It's because this hasn't been an uncomplicated issue for Shiro that he knows why Darc is asking, and how important his answer is.]

I'm still pretty drugged, [He reminds him, lightly.] I might be more scared under other circumstances. I was definitely afraid when your people first found me. But Darc, ever since I've woken up you've done everything you can to make me not afraid.

!!

I just-- [groans. tears his eyes away.] I'm starting to regret not being drugged myself.

[no!! stares back up at him.] I don't just coddle anyone who wanders into my territory! I couldn't afford to have a human panicking. And a human with the first sign of magic in months-- I thought maybe I could find a way to use you, for the sake of the Deimos. Maybe you were a key.

Then I saw your body. Before you woke up and explained, I thought someone on this planet might have done that to you. And I can't allow anything like that on my planet again. Not for the Deimos, not for anyone.

[Shiro's starting to get the idea that Darc just doesn't want to let on that he cares which is funny due to how bad he is at it, but mostly heartbreaking. Shiro could point out all the contradictions—the fact that he waited until Shiro could give permission for his arm to be looked at and, well, everything else.

Nothing is more important than you.]

I don't think you were planning to use me, if that's how you feel.

[WHAT!! Darc reddens, and then blusters out a short, barked laugh. This is RIDICULOUS]

Listen here, I just told you I was-- I just said I had to change my mind.

[Armsqueeze!!]

But fine. That... somewhat explains it. I shouldn't object to you feeling at ease. You're lucky I'm not tricking you into letting your guard down.

[Shiro bites the inside of his lip so he's not grinning ridiculously.]

I guess I am.

[that FACE...]

--And I will give you work. I can think of twenty things I could do with you.

When you're sober.

[This is an opportunity. There are a ton of suggestive comebacks he could use here. Maybe he shouldn't? Maybe he shouldn't flirt with the first alien he ends up alone with. Maybe there should be a one-week rule. Maybe Darc didn't actually flirt with him in the first place and that was just Shiro's drugged, human imaginatiin. He's also on drugs, which lower inhibitions, but it's not Like Shiro's inhibitions were ever high enough that he needed encouragement to flirt with someone who showed an interest.

Result being he goes for it but also psyches himself out. ]

I could do a few things not-sober, too.

[Darc flushes, eyes widening a bit. His heartbeat bump-bumps.

Damn it, and he's been encouraging this. The second human he's ever found. But he doesn't get into every fucking human he sees! Lilia was different, and Shiro, Shiro is different, he doesn't need more time to know that. Shiro isn't like Lilia. Shiro isn't like anyone he's ever met.

He hasn't thrown away the chance that Shiro is faking all of this, lying. But even if that's the case, isn't a liar that good something, too?

His lip twitches to a smile despite himself, cracking straight through his bluster. His tension dissolves and he grumbles, his eyes glinting a bit, tilting his jaw up as he fires right back. I can hit on anyone I fucking want, I'm the king]

In that case, I could think of twenty more things.

[His subdued, gentle smile breaks into a grin.]

Twenty's a lot. Are you sure?

[it is amazing how immediately that grin cements how sure Darc is that he wants to fuck Shiro.

And also spirals him directly into the wall of He's a human, shit, why can't I just pretend to be a normal Deimos for two seconds??

He actually laughs, though it's still short and sharp. A weird, giddy panic kicks up in his brain. But the Divine Ruler is dead, his laws that made Darc's life hell are dead. Can't he do what he wants without hating himself?]

You're the human that fell out of the sky. And you claim you've never seen a Deimos before.

I haven't. But I've met a lot of people who aren't human, if that's what you mean.

[ah.

That's the other thing that has Darc's pulse racing. It's what has Darc believing Shiro, despite how impossible that ought to be. Because someone-- human, Deimos, anyone-- would have to be from a completely different planet to not think Darc looked like a freak. Shiro's staring just hasn't been the same as everyone else's.

He goes a bit more flush, and smiles much more genuinely. Flattered, to a point where his chest feels like something's wrong with it, fluttering in excitement.]

Do you defeat your enemy and find yourself in royalty's care very often? Or are you being reckless, Shiro?

[Shiro laughs, full and genuine. He's glad Darc seems to get the joke, how absurd this all is. Crash-land on an alien planet, become the consort of some alien Emperor... That was the story everyone back at the academy wanted. Nothing about arenas and alien arms and vague nightmares in purple and red. Shiro's chest feels tight and full, delight tumbled with a dull, distant sadness. Mostly delight. ]

I'm usually the responsible one—So this is a first.

[Darc's WHOLE FACE sure changes when he smiles for real, warm and sweet. He ducks his head, feeling more spurred and mischievous by the second.]

It was forbidden for Deimos and Humans to consort with each other for eons. Absolute blasphemy.

[Wow it does. Hastag that feel when the person you fell into flirting with accidentally is even cuter than you thought.]

Good thing you decided it was time for a change.

[Good thing.

Darc looks up at him, wide-eyed, heart in his throat. Shiro is so easily offering to savor a piece of what the whole world has been devouring in front of Darc for his entire life. He has no idea, and having no idea is what makes it work so completely.]

... Hah.

We should... how do you feel?

Still good. Camillia said I'd probably be like this for a few more hours.

Darc wonders if he can count on Camillia to gossip about this so loudly that Delma hears about it in Orcon.

He shakes his head, grinning, and walks up into Shiro's space. He reaches up to press his hand on Shiro's shoulder, a practiced reflex for pulling someone taller to his level, but more gently. He tilts his mouth to rumble in Shiro's ear.]

Come with me. It's not far.

[Darc's hand feels so hot. Just shy enough of burning to pour right through him. His skin's thrumming. This was bound to be intense no matter what, but with the drugs and the victory high, this might kill him.]

I remember walking here, [He says, wry, voice just a low murmur.]

[Darc laughs, a little giddy]

I'm taking you someplace else! That's where Camillia's staying, and I don't want to share, she's dangerous.
